Being Grateful

gratitude tree

It’s been challenging over the last few years with the ever-changing situations we have faced due to the COVID pandemic. We have experienced situations that are new and unfamiliar and at times it felt like our ‘normal’ life had been turned on its head. For many people, it’s been difficult to feel grateful and express gratitude to those we have interacted with.

We asked our seniors who attend Care & Share at Trinity (a Social Support programme for over 65’s) what they are grateful for in this current climate. Their responses included the following listed below:

  • I am grateful for my children who spoil me
  • I am grateful for very good people
  • I am grateful for friendship from the people around me
  • I am grateful for my family and sister’s help
  • I am grateful for my children and grandchildren
  • I am thankful for my lovely little brother
  • I am thankful to be alive and well
  • Sunshine
  • Food
  • Special friends
  • Somewhere to live
  • Peace
  • Independence

They made a gratitude tree and put their thoughts onto leaves so that they could share their gratitude with others who visit their community hall.

What would you have put on your leaf? Some of the things I am grateful for are included in the thoughts above, but additional ones would include:

  • The postman delivering me parcel and letters
  • Online shopping–especially the businesses that have moved to provide increased take away food options when we have been in ‘lock down’.
  • Doctors and medical staff who have worked so hard during these challenging years to keep hospitals and clinics running to care for our health needs.
  • Scientists who invented the vaccines.
  • A government that has worked had to help us through the challenging period–even if they haven’t got it right all the time.
  • Teachers and school staff who have worked hard to teach our children and grandchildren during these unusual times
  • For the online contact I could have with friends and relations even when we couldn’t visit each other.
  • For random acts of kindness.
  • The creative ways that small businesses have adapted to keep operating.
  • For the truckies who keep doing what they do best to ensure that the supermarkets have sufficient stock, even if we thought that they would run out of toilet paper.
  • For a growing appreciation that we are designed to live in communities and interact with each other.
  • For Care & Share staff being willing and able to keep operating to maintain a connection with our participants even during the lockdowns, providing them with support until they could meet again in person.
